This is a space for thoughts from The Editor. At this time, The Editor is Bob Rusch—that’s me. This blog may become a running of unrelated pieces or, provided there is feedback from readers, a series of threads.
As a practicing dyslexic for almost 70 years, I’ve never been comfortable with spelling or my handwriting. With the advent of both the keyboard and the spell-checker, for the most part I’ve been able to hide my weakness. I still have to deal with a keyboard, a new experience for me since the 21st century.
When I first began using e-mail, typing out even a short sentence took me a few minutes and was very frustrating. But spell-checker helpfully alerted me when I was putting ‘p’s where ‘b’s were needed, crossing my ‘l’s and so forth. Unfortunately, no warning flags appeared if I wrote about “Billy Band.” To my computer, both “Billy Band” and “Billy Bang” were okay. However, when it tried to read “Prian Ptabe” (I exaggerate), it alerted me that no such words exist. Fortunately, our Staff Editor at Cadence, Hillary Ryan, who for decades has struggled with my handwritten copy, can read my scrawl better than I can and would decipher “Prian Ptabe” as “Brian Blade.”
Anyone who has received email from me knows that I type sans punctuation. This is my compromise to facilitate communication. All this is the lead-up to explain why my primary entries to this Editor’s Blog will be sound in form and grammar but that responses to readers’ comments (assuming there are any!) will be written in my usual inept (but passionate) form.
So make of this blog what you will. If it is of your will (and if I would or could will it) I would encourage you to voice your comments, whether in agreement or disagreement or to expand in your own directions what you will. Perhaps in this literate (or possibly illiterate) improvisation between us we shall create some thoughts worthy of pondering.
I invite and encourage you to share your thoughts in this forum.
Cheers
Bob Rusch
